Cutting Stations Tour!

Vinyl Cutter Wire Binder Paper Cutter Rototrim

There are many different tools and cutting supplies in the Design lab. This allows students to create many different types of design projects and learn new skills. Each tool has its benefits and draw backs, so sometimes you have to assess which will suit your project best.

Vinyl Cutter!

vinyl cutter

This is the vinyl cutter. it's mainly used to make stickers out of peelable vinyl sheets. It can only take one color of vinyl at a time, so if you want to do a print with multiple colors, the roll must be reloaded and re-set in the clamps. The computer directly next to the cutter is the only one that can upload designs to the machine, so only one student can use it at a time. Be careful when using this machine; do not touch near the cutting area when the machine is on, as it uses a very tiny blade. Ensure that the area is clear of obstructions before use. If at any point you require assistance, be sure to ask the Design Studio Assistant for help when they are available.

Wire Binder!

Wire Binder

This is the Wiremac 31, also known as the wire binder. It punches holes into a stack of paper, then feeds a curled wire through the holes to bind them together like a notebook. This does not require a computer, but does require a good amount of manual labor. Be careful when using this machine; do not place fingers, hair, or anything not permitted into the Wiremac 31. If at any point you require assistance, be sure to ask the Design Studio Assistant for help when they are available.

Industrial Paper Cutter!

Paper Cutter

This is the paper cutter that most students use in SODAC 124. It is also found in the MAC Room 275. The paper cutter is the simplest paper tool found on campus, as it requires few steps to use. Be careful when using this machine; do not place fingers, hair, or anything not permitted under the blade of the paper cutter.

Rotatrim Monorail!

Rotatrim

This is the Rotatrim Monorail. We will call it the rotary trimmer. This machine allows the paper to stay completely still while it is cut, preventing mis-trims. This tool only cuts one sheet at a time and is very good for getting straight lines. Be careful when using this machine; do not place fingers, hair, or anything not permitted under the blade of the paper cutter.
